AKEL C.C. Press Office, 26th May 2015, Nicosia
The Plenum of the C.C. of AKEL, which met today on 26th May 2015, discussed and took decisions on matters related to the forthcoming 22nd Pancyprian Congress of AKEL, which will take place from 4-7th June, at the Conference Centre in Nicosia, under the slogan “Strength comes from struggle, hope come from the Left!”
More specifically, the Plenum of the C.C. of AKEL discussed and approved:
- The proposals of the C.C. of AKEL regarding the statutory changes as they have been changed and enriched following the discussion and views that had been submitted by party members in the Party Base Organizations. Among others, the C.C. adopted the proposal tabled by party members to put a restriction of three terms of office, not only for Members of Parliament, MEP’s and Mayors, which had originally been proposed, but also for municipal councilors, local community mayors and members of Community Councils and School Boards.
- – The financial statement for the five year term, which, as has been announced, will be submitted for the first time in an open session of the Congress.
- – The draft Political Resolution of the 22th Congress.
- – The draft Congress resolutions and messages.
- – The list of candidates for the Central Committee and the Central Control Commission. The decision was taken to propose to the Congress that the number of members of the Central Committee will remain at 105.
- – The committees whose approval was pending and more specifically the electoral committee, the nominations committee and the election committee. The nominations committee will function if the proposal of the C.C. for statutory changes that provide for the method of electing the body is approved by Congress.
- – Other practical issues such as the determination of the Congress Presidium and the proposals for defining delegates speaking time to five minutes. It is recalled that the Congress will be divided into three separate thematic sessions, apart from the closed session to elect the new Central Committee and the special session on the 90th anniversary of the Party.
The three thematic sessions will concern:
- – The “Identity and character of AKEL”, which will examine and discuss everything concerning the better functioning of the party in the present conditions,
- – AKEL’s intervention in the entire social spectrum under the title “AKEL in the frontline of social struggles”.
- – ” AKEL’s proposal society”, in which all the issues and challenges facing Cypriot society, such as developments on the Cyprus problem, the economy, institutions, health, education etc. will be discussed
These Thematic sessions include not only the conclusions, but also AKEL’s proposals, which will represent the left proposal of AKEL to the contemporary social challenges
