AKEL at the 21st International Meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 17th October 2019, Nicosia

AKEL is participating in the 21st International Meeting of the Communist and Workers Parties with a delegation consisting of Neoklis Sylikiotis, member of the Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL and Vera Polycarpou, Head of International Relations and European Affairs Bureau and member of the C.C. of AKEL. The 21st International Meeting of the Communist and Workers’ Parties is taking place on 18-20th October in Izmir, Turkey and is hosted by the Communist Party of Turkey and the Communist Party of Greece. The International Meeting is being held under the title: “100 years since the founding of the Communist International: The struggle for peace and socialism continues!”

The 21st International Meeting is expected to bring together more than 70 parties from 60 countries from all over the world and is of particular importance as it is taking place during a period of heightened aggression on the part of Turkey. The CP of Turkey is struggling inside the country against Erdogan’s policy in the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, the invasion of Syria and the wider imperialist plans in the region. The Communist and Workers’ Parties participating in the meeting are expected to once again denounce the war and foreign interventions in Syria, demanding respect for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. As is the case every year, dozens of Parties respond to the call issued by AKEL and co-sign a Declaration of Solidarity with the struggle of Cyprus for liberation and reunification.

AKEL as a member of the 19-member Working Group – which prepares the International Meetings of Communist and Workers’ Parties – is also participating in the Group’s meeting today, Thursday, 17th October. On the sidelines of the meeting, the AKEL delegation will hold a series of bilateral meetings with parties on developments surrounding the Cyprus problem, as well as on the international scene.
