AKEL appeal to opposition forces for cooperation to stop privatisation drive

Statement of Stavros Evagorou, Deputy Parliamentary Spokesperson of AKEL-Left-New Force

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27th May 2015, Nicosia

econ privatizations cyprusDespite President Anastasiades’ pre-election pledge that he will not move ahead with the privatization of profitable and Semi-governmental organizations and despite the Finance Minister public admission that the state will not need the revenues that would potentially come from privatizations, regretfully the government, ideologically tied to its neoliberal obsessions, is progressing rapidly to the selling off of the Semi-government organizations.

For the sake of promoting privatizations, the Semi-governmental organizations have in essence been abandoned by the government to follow a path of decay.

Bearing in mind the significant social and economic benefits arising from the existence and operation of the Semi-state organizations, what the majority of the people demand today is not the selling off of these organizations, but their modernization, restructuring and autonomy.

This is the reason why as AKEL we have proposed the suspension of the legislation for privatizations until the end of 2017. The goal is on the one hand to halt the path towards privatizations and on the other hand to give sufficient time for the modernization of Semi-state organizations.

As AKEL we address an appeal to all the political forces of the opposition to jointly proceed to stop the selling-off of public wealth and cooperate for the establishment of that legal framework that will lead to the modernization, restructuring and further growth of the Semi-government organizations.
