Progressive change in the country’s governance in 2028 is a non-negotiable objective
Statement of the Central Committee of AKEL
31 October 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The Plenary Session of the Central Committee of AKEL convened today to discuss the Party’s political framework, strategy and roadmap for the 2028 Presidential Elections. The Central Committee of the Party reaffirmed that AKEL is contesting the Presidential Elections with the non-negotiable aim of bringing about progressive change in the country’s governance in 2028. AKEL is moving forward with determination and optimism to build the political and social majority needed for the progressive change that our country and our people require.
For AKEL, progressive change does not merely mean a change of personnel; it means, first and foremost, a change of course for the country, with the following as its guiding principles:
- a solution to the Cyprus problem, an end to the Turkish occupation and the reunification of our homeland and people
- a new economic model for Cyprus that will guarantee sustainable development and a fairer society, tackling growing inequalities, the cost-of-living crisis and the housing crisis, whilst safeguarding the environment and the country’s national wealth for future generations
- the safeguarding of labour rights and the strengthening of the welfare state
- the protection of the country’s strategic infrastructures, vital services and national wealth from being sold off en masse to foreign capital
- the restoration of the rule of law and the fight against corruption and entanglement/interwoven interests
- the defence of democracy against fascism and the far right
- a multi-dimensional foreign policy based on principles which, instead of aligning itself to the US and Israel and serving their interests, will be committed to upholding international law and peace, and will serve the interests and security of our people.
Today’s decision marks the starting point of the Party’s organised campaign for the Presidential Elections. In the coming period, a dialogue will begin – within the political framework – with the Party membership, the Social Alliance, and with figures and groups who have aligned themselves with AKEL for progressive change in 2028.
At the same time, the Central Committee has authorised the Party leadership to engage in discussions with other political forces, organised groups and prominent figures with the aim of forging alliances based on convergences on policy issues.
Finally, through the Party’s collective processes, a proposal will be formulated for the Extraordinary Pan-Cypriot Electoral Conference to select the candidate that will personify all the characteristics necessary to express progressive change.
AKEL addresses a broad appeal to all the people of the Left and to all the progressive and democratic forces in Cypriot society to join their voices with the forces of progressive change, so that we may restore hope to our country and our people.
