AKEL on the planned use of the Akrotiri base for military missions

The British Government has decided to provide military support to Saudi Arabia, amid the escalation of hostilities in the wider region. At the same time, according to reports in the British and international press, British assistance to Saudi Arabia will, once again, involve the use of the British bases on our island.

These developments draw our island into the conflicts of the Middle East and multiply the dangers for our country and our people. The British bases are not only a colonial relic, but also a constant source of danger and threat to our country.

AKEL expresses its opposition to the use and involvement of the British bases in Cyprus in the armed conflicts in the region that threaten regional and international security.

AKEL calls on the government to take action to ensure that our country is not exposed to new dangers as a result of the activities and involvement of the bases. We call on the Christodoulides government to take all necessary steps and make it clear that Cyprus does not consent to any use or involvement of the British bases in the armed conflicts raging in our region.
