AKEL will not accept a cover-up

Statement by Aristos Damianou, Member of the Political Bureau of AKEL and Member of Parliament

The insistence of those appointed by Mr. Anastasiades—his former Ministers—to remain in the positions of Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General, along with their so-called self-recusal, has derailed the criminal investigation. Furthermore, the appointment—after a very long delay—of five criminal investigators, at least two of whom have an obvious conflict of interest, leaves the Christodoulides government that selected them exposed, regardless of the fact that they are respected legal professionals.

AKEL is concerned that the very serious findings of the Anti-Corruption Authority—which place the honorary President of DISY, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, at the centre of the criminal investigation—are in danger of being swept under the carpet. Those who are plotting such scenarios should know that they will find both AKEL and society in general standing up to them.
