The resignations of the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General will pave the way for catharsis and accountability

The Christodoulides government appointed criminal investigators to look into the Anti-Corruption Authority’s Findings on the “State-Mafia,” and an blatant conflict of interest was immediately identified regarding one of them. This raises questions about the government’s seriousness and responsible attitude in this procedure. As for the latest recusal is concerned, it seems to be becoming standard practice and ultimately amounts to self-negation.

In any case, however, the elephant in the room is something else entirely. It is Messrs. Savvides and Angelides, who are at the helm of the Attorney General’s Office, and they are the ones who will have the final say in evaluating any investigative or inquisitorial work.

It is an insult to people’s intelligence to expect them to believe that two individuals appointed by Anastasiades—Ministers in the Anastasiades government and friends of Anastasiades—will decide whether Anastasiades and his associates will be prosecuted.

AKEL demands their immediate resignation. This will pave the way for catharsis and accountability.
