With society or with the privileged few?

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou

As of today, we are  nearing the end of the election campaign.

That is why we will not waste our energy on disputes that do not address society’s genuine concerns and real problems.

After all, we have consciously chosen to follow the path of projecting proposals, posing a simple question before the people:

With society or with the privileged few?

With society or with their super profits?

For AKEL, there is no dilemma. The answer is self-evident:

We stand with society. For society.

For those struggling with expensiveness, the housing crisis, the arbitrariness of the banks, low wages, and pensions.

In a recent report, the European Commission estimates that if those in Cyprus with assets exceeding one billion were taxed at just 2%, the state could collect 800 million euros annually. In other words, there are both resources and ways to support society.

What is needed is boldness, a social orientation, and determination. And, above all, the demonstration of political will.

AKEL, for that reason, has both the political will and the courage, always keeping the interests of the many in mind.
