Citizens should judge Christodoulides’ decisions on the issue of foreclosures

Statement by Aristos Damianou, member of Political Bureau of AKEL

13 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Of course the President of the Republic has the right to refer matters back to Parliament and issue reports. But it is also our right to state the obvious. The President of the Republic chose to sign the problematic proposals of DIKO and far-right ELAM on foreclosures and to refer AKEL’s completely fair proposal on the matter to the Supreme Constitutional Court.

The motive is clear. Mr. Christodoulides, just like his predecessor, remains committed to serving the interests of the big banks at any cost. So, at a time when we voted for the second time in Parliament in favor of our own bill, which grants the self-evident right of borrowers and guarantors to unimpeded access to justice, to seek a stay of foreclosures in cases of unfair terms—which is also a European obligation— Mr. Christodoulides has once again chosen to conform to the bankers’ wishes, and unfortunately, foreclosures and online auctions will continue.

We leave him and his government to the judgment of citizens.
