Instead of focusing on how to effectively lower electricity prices, the government is shying away from confrontation!

Energy poverty is on the rise, electricity supply is in a critical state, and the government continues to act as a representative of powerful private interests instead of serving society.
The complaint jointly filed by the trade union organisations active in the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) confirms that, at a time when citizens are struggling to pay their electricity bills, the government refuses to confront the profiteering and super profits of specific private interests and is not interested in how to substantially reduce the price of electricity.
Instead of allowing EAC to invest in photovoltaics and affordable green energy for the benefit of the public, they blocked it, favouring the plundering of the energy sector. Instead of proceeding in a timely manner with critical infrastructure projects such as the upgrading of the Dekelia power station, they delayed them, thereby imposing a massive cost on society.
The fiasco at Vasilikos, the failure with regards the issue of natural gas, the distortions observed in the electricity market, and the lawlessness noted in the energy sector are evident and there for all to see. It’s the policies pursued by the Anastasiades–DISY government that are responsible, which the Christodoulides government continues to implement today.
However, society can no longer afford to pay the price of failures so that powerful interests are protected. Energy is a social good. Planning, social reflexes and the demonstration of political will to confront those who profit off society are what is required.
