The silence surrounding the “videogate” scandal continues – The government is exposed; an investigation into the black spy van is imperative

Statement by AKEL Parliamentary Spokesperson Giorgos Loukaidis

11 May 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The government’s refusal to provide any answers to critical transparency issues intensifies public distrust and undermines the credibility of institutions. When the reply to substantiated questions is deafening silence, the sense of the existence of a cover-up is reinforced.

Regarding the “videogate” scandal, President Nikos Christodoulides avoids addressing the entanglement mechanism that was uncovered at the Presidential Palace. Black Cube’s admission of responsibility for the footage has debunked the narrative of a supposed “hybrid attack.”

The questions, however, remain and are insistent:

  • What does the full set of audiovisual material that has not been made public contain?
  • How does the government respond to reports linking the material to government decisions?
  • Can it assure us that there is no possibility whatsoever of any blackmail?

In the same context, AKEL reiterates its demand that the details of the companies that donated to the President’s wife’s Fund be submitted to Parliament. The refusal to provide this information, with the support of DISY, DIKO, and far-right ELAM, reinforces suspicions of an ongoing attempt to evade scrutiny and cover up the matter.

At the same time, the “black spy van” case remains a serious unresolved pending issue in relation to the rule of law. The conviction of Tal Dilian (Note: founder of ‘Intellexa’ spyware company and former Israeli intelligence officer) by the Greek courts for surveillance activities once again exposes the stance of the Cypriot authorities.

AKEL demands:

  • Comprehensive answers regarding the videogate scandal.
  • A thorough investigation into all aspects of the case.
  • A review and reopening of the “black spy van” case.

Transparency and accountability are not optional. They are the state’s obligation to society.
