Statement by AKEL Parliamentary Spokesperson Giorgos Loucaides following the rejection of the draft resolution submitted by AKEL, demanding transparency regarding the donors to the Fund of the so-called “First Lady’s Organization”

What took place yesterday in the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives is truly distressing.
The parties DISY, DIKO, and far-right ELAM, in full alignment with the Christodoulides government, voted against AKEL’s resolution to prevent the details of the donor companies of the so-called “First Lady’s Foundation” from being submitted to the House of Representatives.
With this stance, they chose to stand against transparency, against accountability, and, above all, against any parliamentary scrutiny.
The three parties, hand in hand with the government, are attempting to impose a veil of secrecy covering up a scandal that has already discredited even more our country internationally and further undermined citizens’ trust in institutions.
The excuses they have put forward do not convince anyone.
The adoption of resolutions is an established practice of the House of Representatives and has been utilized in similar cases regarding scandals, such as that of the Cooperative Bank.
AKEL will continue, with consistency and determination, to stand against institutional corruption and entanglement, against impunity phenomena and against any form of institutional silence.
AKEL will continue to demand that the names of the donor companies be submitted to Parliament.
Transparency, accountability, and parliamentary scrutiny are prerequisites for democracy. And they are non-negotiable.
