AKEL’s message to the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party of Greece KKE

The Central Committee of AKEL sent a message of greetings to the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party of Greece, which is being held from January 29 to 31. The text of the message follows:

“The Central Committee of AKEL extends a warm comradely greeting to the 22nd Congress of the Communist Party of Greece, to the cadres and members of KKE. We convey our appreciation and respect for the heroic history of the Greek communist movement, as well as our solidarity with the KKE’s struggles for the Greek working people’s rights, for peace and socialism.

Your Congress is taking place at a time when the global geopolitical, military, energy and economic competitions have become explosive, harbouring enormous dangers for humanity. For the first time since World War II, such great concerns exist for the future of the planet, and the threats of a new world war that will destroy humanity are more visible than ever before.

To defend its global supremacy against emerging centres that are challenging it, the US is dramatically escalating its aggression and recklessness at all levels, even to the detriment of their allies in the Euro-Atlantic camp. At the same time, the European Union, in seeking to reverse the decline in its power within the global system, is turning, always in conjunction with NATO, to the development of a “war economy,” channelling huge funds into the military industry and armaments. The war in Ukraine, the ongoing genocide in Gaza, the intervention in Venezuela, the preparations for a military attack on Iran are just a few pieces in the mosaic of imperialist barbarity that the peoples are paying for with rivers of blood, destruction and their displacement as refugees.

In the face of these developments, the duty of defending peace means internationalist solidarity with the suffering and struggling peoples of the world. It means struggling against imperialism, wars, and militarism, but also against capitalism, which breeds and reproduces them.

Within this global context, we point out the very dangerous subordination of Cyprus — but also of Greece — to the geopolitical plans of the US and Israel in our region. These plans pose deadly dangers for our peoples and involve our countries in the bloodstained plans of the Trump and Netanyahu regimes for the entire Middle East. Furthermore, the illusions that are being cultivated in Cyprus and Greece that the US, NATO, and Israel axis will supposedly protect our countries and peoples from Turkish aggression have been repeatedly disproved. These political choices are playing with fire. We want our homeland to become a bridge of peace in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, not an unsinkable aircraft carrier for the imperialists.

These policies complicate the efforts for a solution of the Cyprus problem, which is in a critical state. Fifty-two years after the twin NATO crime committed against Cyprus with the coup d’état executed by the Athens junta and EOKA B and the Turkish invasion, the occupation and colonization are being consolidated every day. Ankara remains hooked on the demand for a two state solution, while at the same time it is exploiting the absence of negotiations in order to perpetuate the de facto division.

AKEL will never compromise with the occupation and partition of our homeland. We continue the struggle to put an end to the occupation and for the reunification of our homeland and people. The only feasible way to achieve this is through the achievement of a solution that has been agreed upon by the two Cypriot communities, Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot, based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality, as described in the relevant resolutions of the United Nations.

The whole experience of the Cyprus problem demonstrates that any departure/deviation from this agreed basis and framework for a solution of the Cyprus problem prepares the ground for partitionist and confederal solutions. The federation is one state, which has been agreed upon that it will have a single sovereignty, a single citizenship, and a single international personality. Bicommunalism exists in the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus, whilst bizonality means nothing more than that the federal state will consist of two constituent units or regions or provinces or whatever they may be called. Besides, the three fundamental freedoms of movement, establishment, and acquisition of property will apply without restrictions, given that this has been agreed upon since the time of D. Christofias and M. A. Talat. It is precisely for this reason that the convergences that have been agreed between the two communities up to 2017 in negotiations must be safeguarded in view of the efforts for a resumption of the negotiations.

AKEL, with the historic ties it has forged with the progressive forces of the Turkish Cypriot community, will continue to work for the common struggle of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for a free, independent, and federal Cyprus.

2026 marks the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of Cyprus – AKEL. All through this period, our Party has shared comradely ties and waged countless joint actions and struggles at all levels with the KKE. Our will is to maintain these ties and strengthen the exchange of experiences and assessments within the framework of mutual respect that must characterize parties of our type. More generally, AKEL believes in and is working for the development of bilateral and multilateral relations with Communist and Workers’ Parties, based on the principles of equality, mutual respect, and non-interference in the internal affairs of parties.

We also consider that the institution of the International Meetings of Communist and Workers’ Parties, which our Parties participate in, represents a valuable forum for dialogue, and we defend their necessity, unity and character, as well as the need to upgrade their content and functioning. We believe in the greatest possible unity in action among Communist and Workers’ Parties, regardless of any differences of opinion that exist, particularly in areas such as the struggle against imperialism, war, and fascism, international solidarity, the struggle for working people’s rights, the front against the falsification of history and anti-communism, and the defence of the vision of socialism.

With these thoughts, AKEL greets and wishes every success to the 22nd Congress of the KKE, which is being held under the slogan “KKE strong, steadfast in every trial, ready to answer History’s call for Socialism!” Socialism is the real and qualitative alternative for a world of peace and prosperity, because it will put humanity’s enormous potential at the service of people and social progress. Socialism is the future of humanity.

We hope your Congress will become a milestone for the development of popular and working people’s struggles in Greece.”
