End the massacres against the Kurdish population and other minorities in Syria

22 January 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The escalation of violence against the Kurdish population and other ethnic and religious groups in Syria calls on the international community to take on its responsibilities. Following the interventions by Turkey, the US, and Israel, Syria found itself under the control of jihadist groups that emerged from a branch of Al Qaeda itself. However, the West, including the EU, proceeded to recognize the regime and strengthen relations with it, indifferent to the release of militants of the murderous ISIS, to the massacres, and mass crimes committed, and threats to the security and rights of minorities and democratic and secular forces in the country.

AKEL joins its voice with all forces around the world calling on the international community to act to put an end to the massacres against the Kurdish population and other minorities and, at the same time, prevent the attack on Rojava, which is constantly being targeted by these obscurantist forces. At the same time, the EU must immediately suspend all funding to the “transitional government” of Syria.

AKEL, which has always stood in solidarity with the progressive Kurdish movements fighting for democratic freedoms and human rights, will intensify its initiatives at every international level to end the violence and ethnic cleansing in Syria.
