AKEL will vote against the Christodoulides government’s budget for 2026
The budget does not address society’s problems

Following a plenary session in which the state budget for 2026 was discussed, the Central Committee of AKEL unanimously decided to vote against it.
Despite the improvement registered in specific macroeconomic indicators, the state budget continues to apply an administrative logic that improves certain economic indicators without however improving the standard of living for a large section of society.
AKEL’s decision is based on an overall assessment of the real picture of the Cyprus economy, but also on the priorities set by the government of Nikos Christodoulides.
Behind the positive assessments lies the real picture of an economy that is growing, but without transforming itself for the benefit of the many. Inequalities are growing, the purchasing power of wages remains stagnant, and the cost-of-living crisis is not being addressed in any meaningful way.
The 2026 state budget does not provide any solutions to critical problems such as inflation and energy poverty, unaffordable housing, and the need to strengthen the purchasing power of households.
The budget continues in the same vein without providing answers to energy insecurity, the delays noted in critical projects, the lack of environmental reforms, the sluggish digital transition, the socially unjust green transition, and the dangerous concentration of the market in sectors such as banking, energy, and health.
AKEL will continue to fight for a real improvement in the standard of living of workers and a fairer distribution of the wealth produced.
It will insist on the need to readapt the country’s priorities so that the economy serves the people and the environment.
