AKEL on the Audit Office’s Special Report on the Forestry Department

29 January 2026, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The Special Report of the Audit Office on the Forestry Department records serious, long-standing weaknesses in the management of state-owned forest land and areas of the Natura 2000 network, confirming problems that have been undermining the protection of our natural environment for years.

The Report’s findings on leases without adequate documentation, delayed or inadequate environmental assessments, lax enforcement of conditions, and loss of public revenue, concern issues that AKEL has repeatedly raised publicly and called for investigations and accountability.

It is no coincidence that Cyprus has been facing infringement proceedings by the European Union for years for its failure to fully implement European environmental legislation and adequately protect the areas of the Natura 2000 network. The findings of the Report expose our country both environmentally and institutionally.

AKEL stresses that the protection of forests, biodiversity, and public property is an obligation of the state and not a matter to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis. Compliance with the European acquis, transparent procedures, and accountability where appropriate are now imperative.

For AKEL, the protection of the environment and the public interest must take precedence over any other considerations.
