We cannot remain indifferent in the face of the genocide in Gaza

Statement by the General Secretary of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, during his visit to the Embassy of Palestine

22 July 2025, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

We are here today, at the Embassy of Palestine in Cyprus, to participate in the symbolic hunger strike action and to express once again our full solidarity and support for the just struggle being waged by the Palestinian people, but also to condemn once again the ongoing genocide taking place in the Gaza Strip and beyond. This is the general policy pursued by the State of Israel and the Netanyahu government against the Palestinians.

We, who historically, traditionally and consistently support the struggle of the Palestinian people, as well as the struggle of every people all over the world, based on a just cause, based on everything that the international community, with much blood and immense effort, has managed to achieve: the right to self-determination, freedom, democracy and to human rights. That’s precisely why we cannot follow a crime being committed by the State of Israel against the Palestinians and remain indifferent.

We stress the need for states and peoples to stand up to such criminal policies that violate international law and the United Nations Charter, which ultimately fuel barbarism in international relations and politics. We must not permit barbarity to prevail, because today the Palestinians are being tortured, tomorrow who knows whose turn it will be. And we, as a people and a country that are themselves victims of invasion, occupation, colonization and suffering from war crimes, cannot, we do not have the moral, nor political right to remain indifferent to the genocide and crimes being committed by the state of Israel against the Palestinians. Dear Ambassador, you know that we shall continue to stand by you in this very difficult struggle that you are waging.
