Instead of taking on the UN, President Christodoulides should be asserting for Cyprus in Brussels

15 June 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

President Christodoulides’ statement that he “does not accept lectures on the management of the issue of migration from anyone” when addressing the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is arrogant and exposes the country internationally.

Solutions and policies on the issue of migration must be developed and implemented according to and not in conflict with international law and the United Nations. Otherwise Cyprus is negating itself on many levels.

Instead of taking on the UN, Mr. Christodoulides should have been asserting in Brussels that the policy that is trapping asylum seekers in Cyprus and the rest of the Mediterranean south should be terminated. He should be asserting the proportional distribution of refugees among EU member states, according to the population and capacities of each one. As long as he cannot stand up and assert in a resolute way for Cyprus, he should not take on anyone else but himself.
