The National Council must convene to discuss the dangerous developments in our region

14 April 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL, Stefanos Stefanou, appealed the President of the Republic to convene the National Council to discuss the dangerous developments in our region today, from the podium of the commemorative event for Dervis Ali Kavazoglou and Kostas Mishiaoulis.

Stefanos Stefanou characteristically said, “If the President of the Republic considers the convening of the National Council on the Cyprus problem as unnecessary, at least he should convene it to discuss the danger of a wider conflagration in the region”.

“The President has an obligation to do so, we demand that he does so because we must see how we protect our Cyprus from the inflammation in the region,” Stefanos Stefanou said, noting that “we certainly cannot protect Cyprus if we elevate ourselves – as the government of Nikos Christodoulides is doing – to a loyal ally of Israel, which is committing genocide against the Palestinian people and has struck Iran’s interests and now Iran is striking back.” The General Secretary of AKEL stressed that “we are against any provocations and actions that lead to the ignition of the region, but we must also act.”

Addressing the President of the Republic, Stefanos Stefanou said, “Mr Christodoulides, Cyprus is in a region that is on fire. You have an obligation to convene the National Council, if only to listen to the political forces.”

“If the other political forces don’t want or don’t care, we ourselves do want and do care, we are concerned and we want to outline our position for the protection of our Cyprus. We want to see how we promote peace in the region and all over the world.”

Finally, Stefanos Stefanou stressed that “the ignoring of the only opposition party, AKEL, by the President evidently belongs to the ‘new spirit’ that the President had declared during the election campaign that he would introduce to our country’s political life. In the end, this pre-election announcement of his, just like so many other of his announcements, turns out to be meaningless and devoid of any content”.
