President Christodoulides lives in a communication bubble, where there obviously there is no awareness of the inflation affecting the rest of society
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Giorgos Koukoumas
30 March 2024, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
Mr Christodoulides and his government persistently refuse to admit that the measures they announced are not even aspirins for inflation.
- What further exposes Mr. Christodoulides is his refusal to implement a drastic social support package to help society withstand the crisis, while the state has the means. The state coffers have increased revenues, which last year alone exceeded EUR 1.5 billion. This revenue comes from inflation, in other words, people are paying twice as much for inflation.
- Mr. Christodoulides is further exposed as he claims to be cutting for fiscal discipline, he rejects AKEL’s suggestions to bolster the state’s finances, i.e., taxing the windfall profits of banks and energy companies. His concern, therefore, is not the state’s finances but not to offend big economic interests. We remind Mr. Christodoulides that he himself supported the taxation of windfall profits of energy companies during the election campaign. However, after a year in government, he found no time to fulfill his commitment, which obviously has also fallen by the wayside.
Mr. Christodoulides lives in a communication bubble, where obviously there is no awareness of the inflation affecting the rest of society. Clearly, within this bubble, there is not even a basic sense of empathy.
