Meeting between the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL S.Stefanou and the Minister of Defence

The General Secretary of the Central Committee of AKEL, St. Stefanou had a meeting today with the Minister of Defence Vassili Palma during which issues concerning the Ministry of Defence and Cyprus’ Defence in general were discussed.

During the meeting, the General Secretary of AKEL pointed out that AKEL’s steadfast position that as long as the Turkish occupation continues and until its end with the achievement of a solution to the Cyprus problem, the National Guard must, within the framework of the state’s financial capabilities, be able to function as an effective deterrent force and in order to be able to confront any provocations and provide security.

At the meeting, the General Secretary of AKEL reiterated the Party’s longstanding position that there must be cooperation and joint efforts on defence and security issues, but without this being to the detriment of exercising scrutiny for the rational use of available resources and meritocracy in the army.
