AKEL Parliamentary Representative contacts in Paphos

A delegation of AKEL, headed by the Party’s Parliamentary Representative Giorgos Loukaides, held meetings in Paphos on Wednesday 28th February 2024.

The delegation had a meeting at the Paphos Technical University with Vice Rector Evangelos Akilas, as well as with a delegation of academic and administrative staff and students.

During the meetings, the positive impact of the Technical University in the Paphos District was discussed, as well as the problems and shortcomings that were noted and need to be addressed immediately.

G.Loukaides said that public universities shouldn’t be led to financial suffocation as a result of the government policies that have been pursued. The AKEL Parliamentary Representative pointed out that it is necessary to support academic freedom and autonomy, while ensuring that any possible arbitrary phenomena should be monitored too.

This was followed by a meeting at the OSYPA bus station (King’s Tombs), where despite the fact that the station has been operating for a short period of time, operational problems have been observed that are making it difficult for both employees and citizens who are served daily through public transport.

Finally, a meeting was held with the workers at the semi-governmental organisation Cyprus Electricity Authority’s facilities (AHK) where AKEL reiterated the need to ensure the viability of AHK despite the criminal omissions that have been noted over the last decade which have affected consumers and the Authority itself.

The AKEL delegation consisted of Andreas Fakontis and Haris Hari, AKEL Paphos District and Organisational Secretary respectively, AKEL Paphos MP Valentinos Fakontis, AKEL city councillor Kostas Diplaros and MEP candidates Andros Karagiannis, Melani Steliou and Paphos Deputy Mayor candidate Kostas Mavromatis.
