AKEL New Year message

Compatriots,

The arrival of each New Year always renews everyone’s aspirations and wishes for a better world, for a better Cyprus, despite the fact that conditions, both local and international, are difficult, even tragic.

In our geographical neighbourhood, in occupied Palestine, a war is raging, that has led to thousands of victims, both children and Palestinian civilians. Our thoughts and solidarity are with the people of Palestine, who are trying to survive in the face of the criminal policy that is being implemented by the State of Israel.

Our wish is that this war will end and that a peaceful and just solution will be found. For peace to prevail in the entire neighbourhood of the long-suffering Middle East.

As far as our Cyprus is concerned, 2024 marks fifty years, half a century, of the Turkish occupation and de facto partition. Our wish and hope is that the New Year will bring freedom and the reunification of our homeland. So that its people – Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins – as well as the young generations to come can live in permanent peace and security.

Compatriots,

2024 is a year of the continuation of our struggles and efforts to make our country a better place.

A better and fairer country for the working people of Cyprus. For all those who work hard and honestly to live and prosper. For all the people who are under increasing pressure from the ongoing price increases and the high cost of living.

A better country worthy of the aspirations young people have, who are the future of our homeland. We must, through our actions and decisions, ensure it for them.

With these thoughts, AKEL wishes from the bottom of its heart all the very best for the New Year, good health and happiness.
