Statement by AKEL General Secretary S.Stefanou after the visit to the CYENS Centre of Excellence

– Ways should be opened to research and innovation

– We should try to transfer the results of research and innovation to the economy and society

7 June 2023, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

The General Secretary of AKEL Stefanos Stefanou visited the CYENS Centre of Excellence today at the invitation of the Mayor of Nicosia.

In his statements after the visit, S. Stefanou said that “the Centres of Excellence show the way forward in opening up paths to research and innovation. We have both brains and talents in Cyprus. We rank the first country in Europe in terms of higher education graduates. The scientific potential is all there. There are so many Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, working and excelling abroad. By investing in research and innovation we can open up prospects for our country, the economy and society. We create knowledge, but we also help the economy and society, if we manage to transfer the results of research and innovation to the Cyprus economy and society. This is a big challenge that we have to win through specific actions by the state and society in general.

The General Secretary of AKEL pointed out that “the peculiarity of CYENS is that it is located very close to the ‘green line’ and that it also utilizes Turkish Cypriots. It also plays a role in promoting bi-communal cooperation which is also very important.

The ongoing cooperation here also demonstrates what we can create in Cyprus if we manage to solve the Cyprus problem and reunite our country and people, we will create even more prospects for our country, our people and especially for the young people who need us to create better conditions for them.”
