The new pupil evaluation system is based on the correct philosophy – An end to the pedagogical crime committed

Statement by AKEL MP Christos Christofides after the session of the Parliamentary Education and Culture Committee

2 June 2023

Today we heard from the mouth of the Minister of Education what AKEL has been saying for years about how the pupil evaluation system should be, its correct philosophy and approach. We were pleased to hear from other political forces that unfortunately had supported and co-constructed all these years (DIKO, EDEK, DYPA) the completely failed system of the quarterly examinations system, their own positive statements.

All this time AKEL was right and they were wrong.  Why? Because our approach was based on modern scientific and pedagogical facts, as opposed to an approach based on ideological obsessions and dogmatism.

Of course we have specific observations and we know that the change in the evaluation system has not solved all the problems noted in the education system. We have also made proposals, the most important of which we consider to be the involvement of teachers, pupils and parents in this procedure because no educational reform can succeed without the support of the direct protagonists of any learning process.

We are therefore putting an end to a pedagogical crime that has been committed against thousands of pupils all through this time. We will continue to be creative with proposals, with suggestions and with positions that are scientifically based and pedagogically correct in order to give our children the school they deserve.
