Wiretapping/surveillance: The evidence on Cyprus and the Greek government’s tricks is overwhelming

- AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou’s mobile phone is ‘clean’ after special examination for possible hacking by illegal software
- In the European Parliament there is an absolute certainty that Cyprus is involved in this scandal of enormous proportions, the PEGA Commission vice-president noted
- Some people knew very well that the wiretapping scandal began in Cyprus
The European Parliament’s PEGA Committee is eagerly awaiting the European Parliament’s PEGA Committee’s visit to Cyprus and Greece to investigate the wiretapping scandal, at the same time as developments in Greece leave no room for doubting the guiltiness of the Mitsotakis government.
Regarding the investigation in Cyprus, apart from the press reports and the data that have seen the light of day, AKEL MEP and vice-chairman of the PEGA Committee, Giorgos Georgiou, told “Haravgi” that there is no development and that is precisely why the Committee has concluded that it is necessary to go to Cyprus. It should be recalled that the Committee will be in Cyprus from 1-3rd November, while a final list will be drawn up, which will concern who the Committee will see.
“Clean” mobile
The AKEL MEP also said that his own mobile phone is “clean”, as no traces of tampering by illegal software were found after the examination by the specialised team.
Explaining why the wiretapping scandal in Cyprus, but also in Greece, is being swept under the carpet, Giorgos Georgiou said that it is a matter of confessing guilt, hence the effort to black out the case. Referring to the Greek example, he explained that this is a travesty, as the government majority in the Committee of Inquiry examining the scandal in the Greek Parliament has used tricks to determine who will be questioned.
“Likewise in Cyprus, as the government denies that there is a scandal, while the evidence is overwhelming about the presence of illegal software companies in the country and their illegal activities,” G.Georgiou said. Moreover, the interconnection of the Tal Dillian companies with other countries is beyond doubt, the AKEL MEP added, even so the government ruling forces deny it.
“We have submitted a series of questions to the Cypriot government, the European Parliament and the European Commission and we expect immediate answers. I am sure that they will find it difficult to reply there and, whatever the answer may be, they will have a problem. And I will explain: If they deny the illegality committed, such evidence will be provided by us (the PEGA Commission) that they will be caught lying,” Giorgos Georgiou underlined.
Asked what is the spirit or the climate that prevails for Cyprus in the “corridors” of the European Parliament, the vice-president of the PEGA Committee said that what is said both in meetings and in contacts with other MEP’s, who draw information from press reports and from the admissions of non-governmental organisations, including Amnesty International, is the absolute certainty that Cyprus is indeed involved in this scandal of enormous proportions. “There is great interest in the European Parliament from many MEP’s”, Giorgos Georgiou underlined.
