AKEL on International Youth Day
AKEL is at the forefront of progressive change, that the young generation needs and deserves

On the occasion of the 12th August, International Youth Day, AKEL extends a warm and militant greeting to all the young people of our country. AKEL stands by and struggle together with the young people of our country, Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins, with all young people living and working in Cyprus. It struggles together with the young workers and the unemployed, the new generation of science, arts and sports, students, school pupils, the young people active in the movements for ecology, human rights and social solidarity. Despite the depreciation and conservatism that is spreading in Cypriot society, our country’s young generation continues to be inspired by the characteristics of questioning and radicalism, the values of solidarity and collectivity, action and the tendency towards the new and the qualitatively different.
However, today’s young generation is the first generation to be called upon to live in worse conditions than those experienced by their parents’ generation. It is called upon to confront the problems that the crisis and the ten years of the DISY government have dramatically increased. Low wages, job insecurity, the housing problem affecting students and young couples, the absence of a modern welfare state that meets the needs of young parents. The cronyism/clientelism and the decay that poisons everything.
AKEL, together with EDON, the biggest and most active youth organisation in our country, has been, is and will remain at the forefront of the struggle to reverse the rotten political and socio-economic establishment that disappoints the young generation and destroys their goals and dreams.
AKEL, with concrete proposals and positions it submits in Parliament, with the mobilisation of youth, through social and political struggles, continues to meet the concerns, aspirations and demands of young people. With determination and action, AKEL is working today to achieve the great progressive change in the governance of the country next February in order to mark a new beginning for the country, which the young generation needs so much and deserves.
