The Report on Turkey “adopts double standards”
Statements by AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou:
7 June 2022, Cyprus News Agency (CNA)
The Report on Turkey adopts double standards, Giorgos Georgiou, AKEL MEP of the Left Group (GUE/NGL) in the European Parliament points out when asked by the Cyprus News Agency to comment on the Report.
Giorgos Georgiou notes that the report correctly takes a critical stance in relation to the ongoing suppression of human rights, the violation of the rule of law, the role of the judiciary, the control exercised over the mass media in the country, but at the same time the Report downplays Turkey’s ongoing provocative and illegal actions against Cyprus, Greece, its neighbors and even the EU which contribute towards destabilisation and insecurity.
In addition, the AKEL MEP is “in favour of unblocking the high-level political dialogue, provided that it does not continue to slide into damaging behaviour that harms the EU and member states”.
Furthermore, Giorgos Georgiou points out that the Report advocates the adoption of a double standards approach with regards the application of international law and the emphasis on the militarisation of international relations.
As far as the Cyprus problem is concerned, the AKEL MEP underlines that initiatives must be taken to ensure that Turkey abandons a two-state solution and returns to the negotiations, which must resume from the point where they had remained in 2017 at Crans Montana.
