FBME decision – Society will pay for the government’s incompetence
Statement by AKEL Political Bureau member and Head of Economic Policy Charis Polycarpou
28 February 2022, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia
The silence of the DISY government on the FBME court ruling can mean two things.
Either the DISY government hasn’t the courage to admit its grave responsibilities for the sloppiness and amateurism with which the government ruling forces have handled the case, or it does not realise the magnitude of the criminal handlings and mistakes it has committed. Whatever the case, the problem is that once again society will be called upon to foot the bill.
The court decision puts the former Finance Minister Charis Georgiades, the deputy President of the ruling DISY Democratic Rally, the Governor of the Central Bank and the Resolution Committee which he headed. When AKEL warned of the dangers, no one listened. Unfortunately, today the state, taxpayers and society are likely to pay many millions of euros in compensation.
The government has a responsibility to be held to account for what happened in the past and for the financial consequences that will arise in the future. Because it is not enough to boast that they are looking for solutions if every day that goes by they are multiplying the problems they will leave us with.
