Douzens of G/c and T/c organizations call for massive participation at the March for Solution and Reunification

With a Joint Statement 106 g/c and t/c organization call for a massive participation to the march organized by AKEL next Sunday in Deryneia.

The Statement was initiated by the Bicommunal Initiative “United Cyprus”.

Common Statement

After decades with the Cyprus Problem unsolved we are facing yet another serious deadlock. As the 75th session of the UN General Assembly convenes in New York, Cyprus continues to be divided with the leaders of the two communities and other involved parties on the Cyprus Problem using up their time at the Assembly to score communication points by putting  proposals outside the framework of the convergences agreed so far and of the relevant UN resolutions. The UN SG  declared last April in Geneva that he will not give up and that he will continue to work for the reunification of the island keeping in mind the people of Cyprus “…that deserve to live in peace and prosperity together.”

And indeed despite widespread disappointment, Turkish and Greek Cypriots have demonstrated an unprecedented resolution in their will for reunification and peace in a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation. Under these conditions, Civil Society has an important role to play.

 

It is the common resolve of Greek and Turkish Cypriots, in Cyprus and overseas, to mobilise and with determination rise above the negative atmosphere created by current leadership on both sides to demand immediate and specific positive steps for the resumption of substantive negotiations on the agreed basis for reunification.

 

Despite the continued efforts to promote a two state solution but also the promotion of the so called new ideas that tend to undermine the convergences reached to date during the long process of negotiations, the Civil Society on both sides of the divide remain focused on working for the reunification of Cyprus on the basis of a Bi-communal Bi-zonal Federation with political equality as set out in the relevant UN resolutions.

We continue to encourage the UN SG to take every step to reconvene the negotiation process based on the convergences reached up to the end of the Conference on Cyprus at Crans Montana  and the 6-point framework proposed at the time.

 

As essential steps to improve the climate for negotiations we call for:

1. An immediate moratorium on all actions in the Eastern Mediterranean that tend to fuel the prevailing volatile situation in the area putting an end to militarization from all parties.
2. Taking practical steps to implement the UN Security Council resolutions on Famagusta, including the proposal for a bi-communal technical committee of experts and representatives to plan and develop the closed areas of Famagusta with a view to returning it to its pre-1974 inhabitants under an interim UN administration.
3. Facilitating the contacts between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots at several levels including the movement across the checkpoints and the bi-communal cooperation in relation to the challenges caused by the pandemic.
4. We, organisations, movements, political parties, unions and people from all walks of life, Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots, declare our resolve to organize and mobilise in support of a solution of the Cyprus problem as soon as possible and the reunification of our country and people as the only path towards a peaceful future for the generations to come. We support and encourage all initiatives seeking to mobilise people towards this end and for that reason we welcome the organization of the march being held under the title of “We march for Solution and Reunification” organized by AKEL on 3^rd of October, 2021 in Deryneia. Furthermore, we call on all the forces that support these aims to participate.

Let this be a stepping stone for strengthening the cooperation of all forces of society on both sides of the divide to work together in order to safeguard peace for the reunification of the island within the framework of a Bi-communal, Bi-zonal Federation.
