Society is paying the cost of the Government’s inaction on Energy

Statement by Haris Polycarpou, AKEL Political Bureau member

27 August 2021, AKEL C.C. Press Office, Nicosia

Society is once again being called upon to pay the increased cost of electricity as a result of nine years of inaction and procrastination on the part of the Anastasiades-DISY Government with regards the advent of natural gas and the introduction of renewable energy sources in the economy.

For years, AKEL both in Parliament and publicly has submitted specific proposals and submitted numerous Memoranda to the relevant Ministries. However, everything has come up against the Government’s refusal to take decisions and actions, serving powerful private interests and shifting the costs on to consumers and society.

The situation is equally difficult regarding the fuel issue. Here too, the Government has shown unacceptable negligence. When they were in opposition they staged television crews at petrol stations. Today, after nine years in government, they have done nothing to address the problem.

If you add to all this the increased costs of essential goods and raw materials recorded internationally, everything points to the difficult economic situation working people and small and medium-sized enterprises are facing.

AKEL will bring the issue back to Parliament and insist on the need for a comprehensive plan to reduce energy costs.
