The protection of citizens’ individual rights is non-negotiable
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 19th January 2021, Nicosia
The new developments surrounding the case of Justice Minister E. Yiolitis expose her and the government – which continues to cover her – even more. The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that there is a reason to revoke the warrant with which the police investigation was carried out in a citizen’s home seeking to find some satirical twitter account.
The Justice Minister is charged with an unprecedented incident of abuse of power against a citizen. This is, of course, a behavior that is part and parcel of the Anastasiades government’s rule, their arrogance and authoritarianism against every institution, journalist and citizen who criticizes them. That is precisely why the President and the government provide cover for the Minister’s unacceptable behavior.
This case will not go away to be forgotten. In a democratic country, no citizen can be afraid that the police will raid his/her home and confiscate his/her computers because he/she is satirizing the government or because that’s what a Minister thinks so. AKEL will insist on the issue, because the protection of citizens’ individual rights is non-negotiable.
