AKEL, as always, will act responsibly on the Cyprus problem
Statement by Aristos Damianou, AKEL Political Bureau member
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th January 2021, Nicosia
For some years now, AKEL has been warning that the prolonged stalemate on the Cyprus problem and the absence of any negotiations favors Turkey and its illegal plans. Especially after the collapse at Crans Montana, Turkey has further hardened its stance, violating the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus in its Exclusive Economic Zone and is carrying out its threats for the colonalisation of Varosha, at no cost whatsoever. Regrettably, the Cyprus problem is at its most crucial point, with the real danger of the permanent consolidation of partition.
That is precisely why, in view of the forthcoming informal conference next month, the Greek Cypriot side and Mr. Anastasiades in particular, must prepare themselves properly. The questioning by Mr. Anastasiades of the Guterres Framework, the acquis of the talks, the convergences that have been recorded so far, and in particular the experimentations surrounding the agreed basis for a solution of bi-zonal, bi-communal Federation, with political equality as defined by the UN, must be abandoned because it has only caused damage to our cause, providing unnecessary alibis to Turkish intransigence. The Turkish side is now officially proposing a two-state solution.
Despite the fact that unfortunately Mr. Anastasiades has lost his credibility, despite the fact that with his regressions and expediencies we are one step away before the finalization of partition, AKEL as a patriotic party will act – as always – so now responsibly.
For AKEL, the prevention of partition and the creation of the preconditions, in particularly adverse conditions, for the resumption of substantive negotiations, based on the agreed basis of the solution, which will lead to the liberation and reunification of our homeland and people, is the compass guiding our decisions and actions.
