Questions are raised about the government’s vaccination plan
Statement by Giorgos T. Georgiou, AKEL Political Bureau member and MP, after the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Health
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 14th January 2021, Nicosia
Today we discussed in the Parliamentary Committee on Health Affairs a subject we tabled for discussion on the vaccination plan to confront Covid-19.
We would like, first of all, to express our satisfaction for the briefing, the great efforts that are being made and our special thanks to all the health professionals and workers, the heroes of the front line.
Our briefing raises a number of questions, for which the Ministry of Health and the government are called upon to answer:
– Why didn’t the National Vaccination Committee convene and take part in the planning, what expediencies were served?
– Why isn’t the Ministry of Health providing any data on the number of people being vaccinated, why this lack of transparency?
– Why has there been such a delay in receiving the vaccines, how will people be vaccinated to achieve immunity, when we were told that the vaccination will go on until the autumn?
– What are the reasons and the expediencies served that we cannot get vaccines from other countries?
– Why these amateur registration tactics of the elderly overnight on the relevant online platform? What does the “first come, first served” policy mean? And why should elderly people be sent from one end of Cyprus to the other to be vaccinated? So much distress!
– What about the 70-80 year olds? What planning is being done with regards the rest of the health professionals, our vulnerable fellow human beings, kidney and cancer patients? Unfortunately there is no plan in place.
– The health certificate under discussion in the European Union and the compulsion to be vaccinated constitutes a violation of the freedoms and human rights of citizens.
AKEL urges the Ministry of Health to proceed with a comprehensive study and planning, utilizing the entire scientific community. Everyone should assume their responsibilities, both the government and the Ministry of Health, and inform the citizens in a coordinated and transparent manner.
