AKEL is not going to compromise with developments sliding towards the final partition of our country

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 2nd December 2020, Nicosia

Today, everyone realises the consequences of the 3 and a half years of an absence of negotiations on the Cyprus problem. Three and a half years were allowed to pass by which were not made use of, indeed at a time when a supporter of the federal solution was in the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community.

Today, from a much more difficult position, we are called to neutralize the Turkish side’s attempt to bring a two-state solution to the negotiating table. The agreed framework and basis for the solution of the Cyprus problem, as defined by the Resolutions of the UN Security Council, are our powerful weapon. At the same time, the Greek Cypriot side must be very clear, consistent and unwavering in its commitment to a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation with political equality as described by the UN and in its readiness for a resumption of the talks from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana, on the bases of the Guterres Framework and the convergences that have been recorded so far. Any possible opening of convergences that have already been agreed, talk about “new ideas” and new regressions on the issue of political equality annul the credibility the Greek Cypriot side’s declarations and will, at this stage, be extremely damaging tactics. As well as all talk about “decentralized” and “loose” federation which will not help, as we are waging the battle against the Turkish attempt to abandon federation.

AKEL is not going to compromise with the developments sliding towards the final partition of our country. The finalization of partition will signal the beginning of new adventures and new dangers for all Cypriots, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The only guarantee for our people and its future is the liberation and reunification of our homeland within the framework of a peaceful solution through negotiations.
