AKEL GS: The government ignored AKEL’s warnings for 3 years
Efforts to coordinate with parties in the occupied area to create a wall of resistance to Turkey’s plans

“Turkey is promoting new fait accompli on the Cyprus problem to such an extent that we will find it difficult to rid ourselves of them,” the General Secretary of AKEL stressed speaking to ‘Astra’ radio station.
Speaking on the “Current news” program, A.Kyprianou said that Turkey is moving ahead step by step with its plans, exploiting the non-reaction on the part of the international community, which, despite the fact that it is clear that Turkey is engaging in illegal actions, is doing absolutely nothing. He added that there are already rumors that Pakistan and Azerbaijan will recognize the pseudo-state in the occupied areas.
Referring to the government, A. Kyprianou said that over the last three years the government ruling forces have ignored the hundreds of warnings issued by AKEL about the dangerous facts on the ground that were being caused by the absence of negotiations on the Cyprus problem with the imposition of fait accompli. For a year and a half, he added, AKEL had been telling the government that Turkey would proceed to impose new fait accompli, especially in the fenced off area of Varosha, but the government replied that these were communication tricks of the Turkish government. Worst of all, the General Secretary of AKEL added, is that when the Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoglu went to the occupied territories after the Crans Montana conference and tried to impose the two-states solution and faced resistance from Akinci and other Turkish Cypriot parties, the Anastasiades-DISY government, however, was mocking Mr. Akinci.
With regards today’s statement by Mr. Tatar, A. Kyprianou wished things would not be as described by the Turkish Cypriot leader, because as he said, in the recent past many within the Greek Cypriot community had said that the President of the Republic didnt refuse talking to various people/circles about a two states solution.
The General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL announced that next week he will go to the occupied territories and have meetings with Turkish Cypriot political parties that support a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal solution and to look at the possibility of developing coordination between them as a reaction to Turkey’s plans.
A.Kyprianou also announced that as soon as conditions permit it, AKEL will organize mass mobilizations on the Cyprus problem.
