AKEL in solidarity with the Peoples’ Democratic Party regarding the mass arrest of its militants

AKEL today sent a message to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) regarding the recent mass arrests of its militants by the Turkish government. The main part of the message follows:
“The Central Committee of AKEL conveys its full solidarity regarding the new blow you received after the decision to arrest 82 members and militants of your Party.
This is another attempt by Erdogan’s authoritarian regime to silence the voices of the progressive opposition in Turkey, but also those who struggled against Turkish support for the ISIS invasion of neighboring Syria.
The latest development is another blow to your Party that counts more than 16,000 political prisoners, among them former Co-Chairs, Members of Parliament, Mayors and your local representatives.
“As AKEL, we stand on the side of all the progressive forces in Turkey who are being victimized by the Turkish government because of their opposition to Erdogan’s policies or because of their political beliefs.”
