The government should work with consistency for the resumption of the talks

Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 17th September 2020, Nicosia

Yesterday’s statement by the Secretary General of the United Nations confirms his intention to convene a five-party meeting immediately after the vote in the occupied territories for the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community.

The upcoming period is critical for the future of the Cyprus problem and of Cyprus itself. That is precisely why, even belatedly our, side is called upon to put aside regressions and contradictions. It is called upon to send out with consistency, persuasiveness and clarity the message that it is ready for a resumption of the negotiations from the point where they had been interrupted at Crans Montana with the aim of reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem within the agreed framework, as the UN and the entire international community have been pointing out for some years. Furthermore, the Cypriot government is also called upon to convey the corresponding messages – messages in favor of a solution and reunification – to both sides of the barbed wire of division, both inside and outside Cyprus. It goes without saying, of course, that for any negotiations to be meaningful, Turkey must terminate its illegal and aggressive actions.
