A positive atmosphere should be created until negotiations resume

The essence of our problem will be solved only if the negotiations on the Cyprus problem resume. We must make use of this period, with moves and actions that will create a positive atmosphere, said the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou, wishing at the same time that the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot side will seek substantive negotiations and a solution of the Cyprus problem.

In a statement on the sidelines of a tour of construction sites in Limassol, the AKEL General Secretary commented on Turkey’s provocative actions, stating that “apart from engaging in illegal actions in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone Erdogan is also unacceptable and provocative. This behaviour must be denounced in all directions.”

At the same time, A.Kyprianou said that denunciations were not enough and did not yield any results “as we have seen in the past” since, he said, “they may lead to a resolution being approved, but the essence of our problems is not solved”.

“The essence of our problems will only be solved when substantive negotiations resume and we manage to reach an agreement on the Cyprus problem, which should of course be based on the agreed framework,” said Andros Kyprianou.

Furthermore, the AKEL General Secretary stressed that AKEL does not blame the Government for negotiations not resuming right now, given that as he said “we all know that until the new leader assumes the leadership of the Turkish Cypriot community, it is very difficult if not impossible for negotiations to resume.”
