AKEL on the critical developments surrounding the Cyprus problem

Statement by the member of the Political Bureau of AKEL Christos Christofides

AKEL C.C. Press Office, 22nd September 2019, Nicosia

Unfortunately, the situation on the Cyprus problem and our country’s future is at a critical juncture. Turkey is continuously creating new fait accompli and roaming on land and sea without any responsibilities being apportioned on it. The battle within the international community has not been won for us, as a result of which Turkey is provocative without having any real cost.

The only way out of this dangerous course of development is through the resumption of negotiations, on a correct basis, with a view to achieving a comprehensive solution of the Cyprus; a solution that will free our country from the occupation, partition and the dangers we face today.

The next few days will be critical for wider developments. Our side must in an assertive and focused way seek the resumption of negotiations.

– On the basis of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federal solution, rejecting the Turkish positions for a two state solution and confederation.

– On the basis of the Framework submitted by the UN Secretary General Guterres without regressions. The Guterres Framework, among other possibilities, offers the possibility of getting rid of the foreign guarantees.

– Reaffirm the convergences that have been recorded so far which constitute a positive basis for a viable and functional solution.

Mr. Anastasiades must be very clear on his positions in the coming critical days. He should address the dangers stemming from the “new ideas” which Turkey wants to promote and seize the opportunity that is offered for a resumption of the dialogue.
