AKEL on Ozersay’s actions in the enclosed city of Famagusta
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 29th August 2019, Nicosia
The actions of the so-called “Foreign Minister” Kudret Özersay in relation to the enclosed city of Famagusta, in the presence of officials of Turkey’s occupation army and the Turkish government, constitute condemnable provocative actions that are flagrantly violating UN Resolutions 550 and 789. At the same time they represent a blatant provocation against the lawful inhabitants of the city.
It is no coincidence at all that these actions are taking place at a time when the efforts underway for a resumption of substantive negotiations on the Cyprus problem are reaching a climax, in view also of the meeting between the two leaders in the presence of the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy on Cyprus Jane Holt. The actions by Özersay and the so-called “government” in the occupied territories in relation to Varosha are aimed at undermining the efforts for a resumption of negotiations for a solution to the Cyprus problem based on principles.
