AKEL will never accept the definitive partition being attempted on the ground

Reply by the General Secretary of AKEL Andros Kyprianou to a journalist’s question

Replying to a journalist’s question about Varosha, the General Secretary of the C.C. of AKEL stated the following:

As far as Varosha is concerned, i.e. the enclosed city, there has been a lot of information for some years that Turkey is planning its opening, the invitation for its return to its lawful inhabitants under Turkish Cypriot administration. This is something that violates the relevant resolutions of the United Nations. I would like to recall that UN Resolution 550 and the ones that subsequently followed explicitly state that Varosha must be returned under the administration of the UN and that the right of the lawful residents to return to their properties should be granted.

Therefore, if this is being planned by the Turkish side, what we will say is that it is evident that there is an attempt underway to ensure the definitive partition of Cyprus on the ground. We will never accept such a development.
