The General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou expressed his satisfaction with the meetings held so far with the Ambassadors of the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council.
On Tuesday, the delegation of AKEL, which includes Yiorgos Loukaides and Toumazos Tsielepis, met with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom Jonathan Allen and yesterday with the US and Chinese Deputy Permanent Representatives to the UN Security Council, Jonathan Cohen, and Wu Haitao respectively.
The delegation of AKEL also had a meeting with the Permanent Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Ambassador Maria Theophili, as well as with the Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation. Today, the AKEL delegation will have a meeting with the Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations for Political Affairs, Rosemary Di Carlo.
In his statements, Mr. Kyprianou said that AKEL had raised the urgent need for the negotiations to start as soon as possible provided that this will be preceded by a good preparation on the part of the UN Secretary-General’s Special envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute, so as to ensure that they will be more chances of success than failure.
Andros Kyprianou clarified that AKEL will not accept guarantee and intervention rights after the achievement of a solution has been reached and that there must gradually also be a complete withdrawal of the occupying troops from Cyprus.
At the same time, he called for their support, both with regards the need for a resumption of negotiations and for the renewal of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force mandate in Cyprus next January, when the relevant debate will take place in the UN Security Council.
