AKEL GS: The President is negotiating on its own and only informs the Archbishop

29 September 2018, ‘Astra” Radio station

President Anastasiades has failed miserably on the Cyprus problem, stated the General Secretary of AKEL A.Kyprianou. Andros Kyprianou stressed that not only are the talks not resuming, but that no one knows what will subsequently follow. He referred to the issue of the renewal of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force (UNFICYP) mandate, to the arrival of the Turkish exploratory vessel, as well as to developments in the Turkish Cypriot community.

Speaking to “Astra” radio station, Mr. Kyprianou underlined that when partition comes, then the President will understand what had happened and that he must take responsibility for the developments.

He also criticized Nikos Anastasiades for negotiating the Cyprus problem on his own and because the only person he informs is the Archbishop.

The General Secretary of AKEL also said that the President is playing with everyone’s intelligence when referring to the 4th July Guterres framework, while the official UN documents refer to a 30th June document.

Referring to reports that the President has called for a more active engagement on the part of Washington, Andros Kyprianou stressed that Mr. Anastasiades seems to forget that it is the US that have caused the Cyprus problem and together with Britain in the past have supported Turkey’s positions on the issue of guarantees.

Called upon to comment on the position of “Citizen’s Alliance” leader Yiorgos Lillikas on the Cyprus problem, Mr. Kyprianou wondered whether the President of “Citizens’ Alliance” supported covert partition when, for 10 years as an AKEL MP, he was in agreement with the solution of a Bi-zonal, Bi-communal Federation.
