AKEL is also worried about the President’s mutually conflicting, contradictory and erroneous positions on the Cyprus problem
Reply of the AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou to the Government Spokesman Mr. Prodromos Prodromou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 18 September 2018, Nicosia
AKEL is worried about many things with regards the Cyprus problem. First and foremost, it is concerned about what the outcome of developments will be and what the UN Secretary-General’s decision will eventually be. Namely, whether he will undertake a new initiative for a resumption of the negotiations. Of course we are concerned about what is happening in Turkey and the positions being expressed by the Turkish side. At the same time, however, we are also worried about the mutually conflicting, contradictory and erroneous positions and statements made from time to time by the President of the Republic and the government ruling forces on the Cyprus problem.
As far as the statement about a “repositioning of the Cyprus problem” is concerned, which the President of the Republic made yesterday, we are worried because he used rhetoric that until recently was characteristic of others.
In any case, how trustworthy and credible each and every one is will be judged when the UN Secretary-General announces his decisions on the prospect of a resumption of the talks.
It is our wish and hope that the UN Secretary-General will undertake a new initiative for a resumption of the negotiations that will lead to a solution of liberation and reunification.
