The hour of truth on the Cyprus problem is approaching
Statement by the AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 27 August 2018, Nicosia
The hour of truth on the Cyprus problem is approaching. The perspective of the Cyprus problem will be determined by the decision of the UN Secretary-General Mr. Guterres whether he will take a new initiative on the Cyprus problem.
During these crucial times it very important for the Greek Cypriot side to send out messages expressing its readiness to engage in a meaningful dialogue as the UN Secretary-General has outlined, categorically excluding any discussion of solutions other than those outlined by the UN resolutions. The statements made lately by both the Foreign Minister, as well as by the Greek Cypriot negotiator are moving in the correct direction.
Of course, Mr. Guterres’ decisions will not be judged by the public statements being made, but determined by the Report that will be prepared by the UN secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Cyprus Mrs. Lute when she concludes her contacts with the involved parties. What positions the involved parties have and whether they meet the preconditions set out in the UN Secretary-General’s Reports for a resumption of the negotiations will be ascertained with the Report and Mr. Guterres’ decisions.
