“Guterres is referring to the 30th June document”

Statements by Toumazos Tsielepis, AKEL Political Bureau member and Head of the Cyprus Problem Office of the C.C.

1 June 2018, “Astra” radio station

toumazos pplThe only existing way to resume the talks is for a negotiation to be conducted within the Guterres framework and the President of the Republic must give a positive response to the UN Secretary-General, as we have nothing to lose, stressed Toumazos Tsielepis, AKEL Political Bureau member speaking to “Astra” radio station in the morning.

In the document, he said, it is underlined that guarantees and intervention rights must be terminated and that is what the UN Secretary-General, Britain and Greece say.

If we go into a dialogue, he added, it will become apparent that it was Turkey that was fooling the UN Secretary-General and the Greek Cypriot side will leave the defendant’s dock from where it stood after the submission of Mr. Guterres’ report to the Security Council, or the procedure itself will proceed.

Referring to the Guterres document, Mr. Tsielepis explained that on 30th June an informal document was given in writing and comments were made on it, some explanations were given by the former UN Secretary-General Special Representative on Cyprus Mr. Eide, which the Greek Cypriot side recorded. He noted that the UN Secretary-General himself after Crans Montana refers to his 30th June document.

Toumazos Tsielepis also underlined that AKEL will not be silent about a path leading to a final partition, regardless of the political cost. He pointed out that the whole debate that is currently underway is nothing more than endless gossip that is diverting from the essence. Everything that is being leaked are positions of our own side, not of the United Nations, he pointed out.
