AKEL Political Bureau on the extremely worrying situation surrounding the Cyprus problem
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 31 May 2018, Nicosia
The Political Bureau of the C.C. of AKEL in its session today discussed, inter alia, the extremely worrying situation surrounding the Cyprus problem and concluded the following:
Firstly, it was briefed about the documents that were studied today at the Presidential Palace following a relevant invitation by the President of the Republic. The conclusion is that our critical approach with regards the President’s handling is justified and objective and does not require any differentiation from the study of the relevant documents.
Secondly, our concern is growing after the unilateral move by Mustafa Akinci for the resumption of the negotiations and the President’s continued unwillingness to respond in the same way. The protracted stalemate on the Cyprus problem facilitates the promotion of the Turkish plans against Cyprus.
Thirdly, it is not AKEL’s well-documented and substantiated criticism that is serving Turkish objectives as the President of the Republic is claiming, but the President’s tactic of continually setting terms and preconditions. His handlings have already led to Turkey being relieved of any responsibilities through the Report submitted by the UN Secretary-General last September, a fact which enables it to act undisturbed in the direction of provocations and the consolidation of the partitionist status quo.
Fourthly, AKEL does not accept lessons about patriotism from anyone. AKEL has demonstrated in practice its patriotism for the umpteenth time when it supported the negotiating procedure disregarding political cost. We did so because we have set and will continue to place above all else the well-intentioned interests of our homeland and our people which are guaranteed only by the solution of the Cyprus problem, liberation and reunification. On the contrary, it was Mr. Anastasiades who, at the critical time, opted for the seat of power instead of our country’s interest.
