The two leaders to assume their historical responsibility to push things in the direction of the solution of the Cyprus problem
Statement by AKEL C.C. Spokesperson Stefanos Stefanou
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 17 April 2018, Nicosia
To be able to make a comprehensive assessment of the results of the Anastasiades-Akinci dinner, we need to be briefed first.
We of course didn’t expect that the dinner would lead to a resumption of the negotiations. However, we expected that the two leaders would do what the UN has for some time has declared. That is, that the two leaders must convince him that they have the political will for a resumption of the negotiations, as he himself proposed in the Report he had submitted after the break down at Crans Montana, namely the resumption of negotiations from the point where they had remained at Crans Montana, utilizing the body of work of the negotiations and with the package approach procedure of the six issues which the UN Secretary-General set at two tables.
It is obvious that if the two leaders do not align themselves with the line charted by the UN Secretary-General, we will not have a resumption of the negotiations and the impasse will continue with all the dangers the continuation of the status quo provokes.
We call upon the two leaders to assume their historical responsibility to push things in the direction of the solution of the Cyprus problem, for the liberation and reunification of our country and people.
