Let the heroic Polytechnic uprising and its ideals be a source of inspiration for the Cypriot people too
AKEL on the anniversary of the Athens Polytechnic uprising
AKEL C.C. Press Office, 16th November 2017, Nicosia
Forty-four years onwards, AKEL honors the heroic 1973 Athens Polytechnic uprising, the young people who proceeded to the occupation of the Polytechnic and the thousands of people who participated in the three days of continuous mobilization, showing the road of struggle for democracy, independence and dignity. The Polytechnic uprising was the culmination of the resistance to the fascism of the Junta and an expression of the need of the Greek people for “Bread-Education-Freedom” and “National Independence”.
The Polytechnic, despite the bloody repression of the uprising, was the beginning of the end of the seven-year junta; an end that came unfortunately with the completion of the betrayal committed against Cyprus and its peoples.
Forty-four years later, the Polytechnic uprising’s messages continue to topical. The Polytechnic lives not only as a historical memory, but also as a current necessity in the struggles for freedom, peace, democracy and social justice. The Polytechnic recalls the crime and betrayal against Cyprus committed by the Athens junta with its representatives here in Cyprus, namely EOKA B and Griva. It reminds us of the role played by NATO and imperialism.
AKEL honors the heroic dead of the Polytechnic uprising, which have watered the tree of freedom, democracy and progress with their blood. We address a warm greeting to the Greek people and express our solidarity and support with their struggles. Let the heroic uprising of the Polytechnic and its ideals be a source of inspiration for the Cypriot people too.
